This Roundtable on cross-border cooperation, traditionally organised at the end of each year before the relaxing Christmas holidays, brings together about eighty experts and stakeholders from the EU countries and on the EU direct neighbourhood: Estonia, Finland, Latvia, Lithuania, Sweden, Russia, Belarus, Moldova, and Ukraine to exchange views on the experiences and deliberate on the future of the cross-border cooperation in the region.
With the EU Baltic Sea Strategy that has been launched
by the European Commission in July 2009, one of the main discussion
topics concentrates on the thematic priorities of the EU Baltic Sea
Strategy such as the environment, regional development and Baltic
identity; and on the role of the multilateral cooperation in the Baltic
Sea Region as a factor of a successful bilateral cross-border
cooperation on the EU external borders.
Since Baltic Sea Strategy is a new program there is a need for learning and experience exchange with other transboundary water areas such as Barents Sea, Black Sea cooperation. The parallel sessions of the roundtable discuss the experiences and best practices in the Estonian-Russian-Finnish, Moldovan-Ukrainian and other transboundary regions water management, energy and environment, cultural cooperation and other projects.
Organisation of the event is supported by the Nordic Council of Ministers, Estonian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Konrad Adenauer Foundation.
